Something creaked in the hallway, making me whirl around. I kept the phone bill hidden behind my back. No one was there, but the door was cracked open wide enough for a face to fit through.

I returned the bill to its envelope, then slipped it in the middle of the stack, sliding the mail back to the open space by the desk lamp.

With a thudding heart, I inched toward the door. Had I shut it on my way in? Surely I would have; I’d been sneaking into Vincent’s room.

I shook my head. No, I must not have shut it because I would have heard if someone opened it. I paused, considering the chances someone had seen me going through Vincent’s mail. Someone had been in the hallway—floorboards didn’t creak on their own—but it was possible it was one of Terence’s guys making another trip from the staged bedroom on the other side of the house to the storage shed.

I took a deep breath, then continued toward the door. If someone saw me coming from his room, I would say I was looking for a book with a blue spine. It was half-true, since I’d wanted to look for such a book a couple of weeks ago.

No one was in the hallway when I stepped out of Vincent’s room. This time I made sure to close the door. The mumbling of voices I’d heard earlier had multiplied, and as I walked down the stairs, they grew louder and clearer. One voice rose above the others: Reid’s.

On the bottom step, I checked my phone, hoping Carmella had texted me a brilliant excuse for backing out of my dinner plans. I needed something good. Something that wouldn’t anger a potentially dangerous mysterious man whose brother had asked him to ‘come take of something’ less than an hour before Willy was killed, and who’d had a fiery argument with Vincent the same week he mysteriously ‘fell’ from his balcony.

I wandered toward the voices in the kitchen, taking the long way through the family room to give me extra time to think of an excuse. Normally, I preferred sticking to the truth, but there was no way to tell him delicately that he made me feel uneasy.

Now there was only one voice—Reid’s—in the kitchen. I slipped into the room and stood behind two of Terence’s tallest guys. From what I could tell, the entire crew was in here. Most of them looked annoyed, probably because he was preventing them from cutting out early.

“Ah, Hadley!” Reid called out over the crowd. “You’re just in time. I was about to share some exciting news. Vinn has made remarkable progress, and is coming home from the hospital tomorrow.” He paused, as if waiting for everyone to whoop and cheer, then continued talking. “The hospital is supposed to discharge him around noon, and he will need the afternoon to get situated at home. He would like everyone to work tomorrow morning as planned, but leave by noon.”

Now came the clapping and cheering, mostly from Terence’s crew.
